Berry men's soccer hosts Southern Wesleyan at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Region XIII Tournament play-in game. The winner advances to the semifinals at Auburn-Montgomery. The Vikings finished the season 9-10 witha 5-3 record in the SSAC and were ranked No. 25 in the final NAIA National Poll. Southern Wesleyan had a record of 11-7 and were 4-4 in Southern States Athletic Competitions.
This is the third time this season that the Vikings and Warriors will meet. The previous two meetings have ended in 3-0 wins for the Vikings. The last meeting in the SSAC Tournament at Berry carried a price though, as Southern Wesleyan tackles broke the ankle of Berry midfielder Alejandro Palacios and the nose of defender Patryk Strojny.
The Vikings will depend on Luis Salazar to carry the offensive load. The freshman from Dalton, Ga., finished the season with 13 goals, nine assists and 35 points to lead the team in all offensive categories. Teja Barkmann was second on the team with 11 goals, six assists and 28 points. Palacios had 24 points and nine goals to place third on the team.
Defensively the Vikings will have to rely on first-team All-Conference goalkeeper Mike Wentzler who had 93 saves during the season including 13 in the Vikings 2-1 double-overtime loss to the No. 1 team in the nation AUM in the SSAC Tournament semifinals.
Southern Wesleyan is led offensively by Tyson John. He had 19 goals and five assists to lead the team this season with 43 points.
The winner of this match will face top-seed AUM on the Senators home field in Montgomery, Ala. in the semifinals of the Region XIII Tournament. The other side of the bracket features the winner between No. 3 seed Mobile and No. 6 seed Shorter which meet at 5 p.m. on Friday in Mobile, moving on to face second-seed Lee in the other semifinal. The winners of the semifinal will advance to final at AUM.
