The Southern Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 1

Published Sep 1, 2006
(Updated Dec 26, 2006)

Lake Lanier is down 8.1 feet, the creeks are slightly stained and the main lake is clear and 83 degrees.

Largemouth bass fishing is slow. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather, especially early in the week. The Chug Bug or a Pop R will get a few strikes crank baits in baby bass are working as well. Short run-out points that drop off sharply into deep water are some of the key areas to look for. There are a few fish moving early and even in the middle of the day looking for food as the water temperatures start to cool down. The best locations are the coves and pockets just south of the Wahoo Creek Bridge.

Look in Little River around marker #7 and fish the pockets and points close by. There are some good docks in this area close to clay points that have been good all last month. Fish from Clarks Bridge to Thompson Bridge is a good place to start. Do not overlook super shallow stumps that are popping up all over the upper lake. A submerged hump with wood or rock around the rowing club is an excellent area to fish the #5 baby bass jointed Shad Rap or the suspending model.

Work your way down the creek and then come back to the same locations with different lures. Start with black and silver or blue and silver and keep changing colors until you find what they want. With any off colored waters, go directly to the fire tiger color. Later in the day, use a u-tail worm on the Carolina rig and fish these same areas. Added garlic scent is a must when throwing worms or jigs this time of the year.

Spotted bass are being caught on the rocky areas with wood close by and on man made brush piles lake wide. Use the Texas rig or drop shot rig and a small worm in any color that is closely related to green. Doctor this bait with a lot of garlic scent and add a little color to the tail. Four inch worms are getting the majority of the bites however; the six inch fish are putting bigger spots into the boat. Skip this bait under docks around Gainesville Marina and around the docks in the back of Lan Mar Marina and the fish will strike.

Mid-lake in and around the Gainesville Marina, work every dock in every creek and skip a Zoom Super Fluke under the dock. Something will get these baits on the fall. We have had some good nights just in the mouth of Young Deer Creek on the right side on the small points with rocks Fat Albert’s and Bandit 200 root beer cranks baits on 6 pound test have been very good.

Stripers are at depths from 25 to 60 feet deep on and over the old river channel. Be at least over 100 feet of water. This is an easy way to catch numbers and sizes, just troll. There has been no real top water action yet but some cool days and nights may stir this action up as the water. The Lowrance 332C and the X135 are wonderful tools to help anglers find fish many others miss. In any major creek mouth on the south end of the lake is a good area to all day. Troll an area especially in the mouths of the major creeks until the fish pop up on the screen. Trolling lead core 27 pound test with a 30 to 50 foot 17 pound fluorocarbon line and a one ounce Mack Farr Super jig in white with any color trailer deep to 30 feet will work. Watch the trees to hold the fish right on and off the river tree lines.

There have been some good fish caught in the mouth of the East Bank area out to 60 feet on down lines, herring and even trolling. This seems to be a good area to concentrate on if there are not a lot of boats in the way. Try a bleeding shiner hook in small sizes and use from a one or two ounce sinker and a long 6 foot or longer leader so the sinker will not to spook the fish. Live bait is fair but the fish are just looking at the baits and not eating them for some reason.

Crappie have been slow with only a few fish coming in at night. Drop or shoot small tubes in to the docks up lake in the off colored waters and use small 1/24 ounce lead heads and 4 pound test. Then drift over creek beds and try following the baitfish that are moving into the creeks. Work from the mouth of the creeks and follow the channel.
