I see the City of Cumming is donating $25,000 in cash and more in goods to Slidell, LA. This is great, but why doesn't the City of Cumming take some of that and put it into the hands of evacuees that are living here. They need the money. There is so much money floating around out there, but it is not trickling down to the evacuees. I wonder if Mayor Gravitt really understands what these new residents face every day - probably not. All the politicians are asleep at the wheel. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue. Its an American issue. The Mayor of Sugar Hill doesn't want people to have more than 1 family in a house. The Mayor of Cumming sends money to Slidell. These politicians are out of touch with what is happening in their own community. By the way, did the $52,000 the Forsyth Fire Department collected get into the hands of the evacuees. I applaud the Fire Department's efforts, but someone needs to follow up to make sure that money gets to the evacuees as it was intended. Everywhere you go, collections are taken, but who coordinates the distribution?? Collections are made at churches and sent away...so that when the evacuees here try to get assistance, there isn't any available. I think the local governments just want these people to go away. They are insensitive to the needs of evacuees. These people are not going to go away. They have nowhere to go. Everyone in the community - government, faith-based groups, churches and citizens -- need to pitch in so that these people don't spiral into permanent poverty. Its happening right now. I personally know many evacuees that are experiencing this now. Please contact me, Terry Baradine, at (404) 966-8986, if you want to help.
