Stand Watie, nephew of Major Ridge, was born in the Cherokee Nation near Calhoun, Georgia. In 1835, he signed the Treaty of New Echota and peacefully removed to Oklahoma in 1837. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Watie joined the Southern cause and organized a Cherokee Calvary unit which he led in 18 major battles. In 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of the first Indian Brigade. He was the only Indian to attain the rank of general in the Civil War. Watie surrendered on June 23, 1865. He was the last Confederate general to lay down his arms. The Chieftains exhibit portrays Stand Watie's life as a Cherokee planter in Georgia and a Confederate general in the Civil War.
