Change Your Clocks. Change your Batteries.

When daylight-savings time begins on Sunday, April 2, be sure to not only change your clocks, but also check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

"While you’re changing the clocks in your home, the Forsyth County Fire Department recommends taking the time to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors," said Fire Chief Danny Bowman. "It’s a simple task that could potentially save a life. Plus, it’s simple to remember: change your clocks, change your batteries."

The Forsyth County Fire Department recommends testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least once a month and replacing the batteries every six months. The units themselves should be replaced every eight to ten years.

The Fire Department also reminds citizens to:

• Be sure to have a smoke detector on every level of your home

• Make sure smoke detectors are clean and free of dust

• Always dial 911 in case of any emergency

The Forsyth County Fire Department is eager to help those who may need smoke detectors in their residence. The departments Public Safety Education division provides smoke detectors free of charge for senior citizens and needy residents; they will also install those detectors. For details on this program, please call Public Safety Educator Bob Westbrook at Fire Department Headquarters at 770.781.2180.
