Georgia DOT announces there will be no lane closures Statewide on Interstates or State Routes during the long Memorial Day Weekend unless emergency maintenance work is required or if the wildfires cause closures in South Georgia.

Teri Pope, DOT Communications Officer said, “Lane closures will not be allowed beginning at 5:00am Friday morning, May 25th through 10:00pm Monday, May 28th.  Work can still occur on projects but it must be outside of the travel lanes; not impacting your drive. This year we want to warn you there could be roads closed due to the wildfires in South Georgia. Over the weekend I-75 had to be closed because smoke from the fires limited the visibility on the Interstate.”

DOT is now including mandatory no work days on holidays and peak travel days around holidays into our construction contracts.

“Even though we won’t be working in the roads please make sure to slow down at many crashes in work zones occur while that work zone is not active. Also remember that all fines are doubled in work zones even when they aren’t active. Speeding through a work zone can hurt you and your pocketbook,” said Pope.
