With Forsyth County’s continuing growth in population of persons over the age of 55, I have asked my self the question, “Does Forsyth County need to establish a special zoning category for Residential Senior Living?” Over the past three plus years, I have zoned several properties within District 1 with special conditions to assist senior living. As our aging population grows, I foresee an ever-increasing need for housing geared to this special group.
To be proactive in this area, I am beginning a study of what other communities have done to establish a set of guidelines for senior housing. My goal is to have staff, with the assistance of a committee of senior citizens, draft an amendment to the Unified Development Code creating a Residential Senior Living District or RSL. This zoning district would be conditioned to meet the special needs of our senior citizens. Stay tuned for future developments on this subject.
