The whole world will be on display in Rome when the Smithsonian traveling exhibition “Earth from Space” opens Jan. 28 at the Lakeview Auditorium art gallery on the Georgia Highlands College. GHC is the first venue to host the exhibit outside the Smithsonian.

“Earth from Space” uses 40 detailed satellite images to illustrate how satellite imagery is gathered and used to expand our understanding of life on Earth. Visitors can explore the shadows of the Great Pyramids; the powerful, swirling arms of a hurricane and the channels entering the Arctic Ocean, among other images. The exhibit also features a Magic Planet digital video globe with animations highlighting the global extent of images returned from orbiting satellites.

“Georgia Highlands took advantage of a great opportunity last fall when we brought our first Smithsonian exhibit to campus,” said John Spranza, director of student life. “‘Earth from Space’ continues our successful Smithsonian program and affords our students and members of our community the opportunity to delve into a nationally recognized exhibit in our own back yard.”

A companion Web site, www.earthfromspace.si.edu, contains an online version of the exhibition along with education resources such as lesson plans and classroom activities.

“Earth from Space" was developed by the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibition was made possible by Global Imagination with additional support from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Smithsonian Women’s Center. Andrew Johnston, a geographer at the center, is the exhibit curator.

“Earth from Space” will be on display until March 25 before continuing on a national tour through 2007. The exhibit will be open to the public Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Fridays 9 a.m. until noon; Sundays, 1 until 4 p.m.; and other times by appointment.
