Governor Perdue thanked the members of the General Assembly on Thursday for passing his Classrooms First for Georgia Act. The bill will require 65 percent of all education dollars be spent directly in the classroom.

“This important piece of legislation will put resources where Georgia’s children need them most. Students perform best when at least 65 percent of education dollars are spent in the classroom, where learning occurs,” said Governor Perdue.

Salaries for teachers and teacher’s aides, costs for textbooks, computers and field trips will all fall under classroom expenses.

“Making classroom spending a priority and providing our hard working teachers with more classroom resources will give our students the best opportunity to reach their fullest potential,” said Governor Perdue.

If a school is already performing at average or above average levels, then the 65 percent rule wouldn’t apply to them. Out of Georgia’s 180 school districts, 64 already spend 65 percent or more of their budgets on classroom instruction. The remaining school systems have until 2008 to meet the standards put in place.
