Record numbers turn out for Winnie the Pooh audition

Auditions for Winnie the Pooh attracted 114 children - a record for the Sawnee Cultural Arts Center's children's theatre program.

Auditions for Winnie the Pooh were held last Tuesday at the Sawnee Cultural Arts Center and 114 children participated, a new record for the Center’s Saturday on Stage children’s theatre program.

Karen Beyer, who will direct the show, expressed her gratitude for such a wonderful display of support for theatrical arts. “I am so excited that the children and parents of our community are interested in the theatre and auditioning for the show. We have such a wealth of talent in Forsyth County and I am looking forward to working with each of the children in the cast.”

Originally, a cast of 13 characters was planned for the production. After seeing all 114 kids in auditions, Beyer and Paula DeLong Glover, SCAC Executive Director, made the decision to double cast the play. Instead of 13 children, one cast and only six performances, there will now be 26 children, two casts and ten performances.

“It will definitely be a challenge to rehearse both casts and get all the costumes ready for ten performances. When we discovered how many talented kids were interested in participating, Karen and I both knew we needed to find a way for more kids to be in the show,” said Glover.

Performances of Winnie the Pooh will be given in the Center’s Backstage Blackbox Theatre, October 9 – 23. All seats are $8 and tickets go on sale to the public August 20. For information on show times or to order tickets, please call the Center at 770.889.4977.
