GEORGIA LAW provides that every new homeowner, as of January 2006, is eligible to claim Homestead Exemption as a tax benefit that can amount to considerable annual savings for the homeowner.
A Homestead Exemption allows a partial exemption on a portion of the assessed value of your home. The amount varies from county to county. To qualify for the property tax exemption, the HOMEOWNER must file for Homestead Exemption at the county Court House or Tax Office, either in person, by mail or on a web site, depending on the county in which you reside.
If you purchased land or investment property, please contact your County Court House to see if you need to file a special “tax return.” This is not to be confused with an income tax return.
The following is a list of several counties, their phone numbers, web sites, and filing dates for each. Please call the number of the county in which you reside or refer to their web site for instructions on filing. A few county web sites have on-line filing.
