Floyd Medical Center’s Echocardiography Laboratory has received accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).

Echocardiography helps to detect and manage many types of heart disease. Noninvasive echocardiographic testing has become one of the standard diagnostic tools in cardiology with an estimated 10 million echocardiograms performed annually. The complex imaging technique requires experienced and well-trained physicians and sonographers to produce quality results.

The ICAEL’s accreditation program evaluates the critical elements of an echocardiography laboratory, including case studies and the lab’s adherence to ICAEL standards. Accreditation by the ICAEL signifies the facility has been reviewed by an independent agency that recognizes the laboratory’s commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.

“Accreditation puts Floyd at the forefront of echocardiography in Northwest Georgia,” said Mike Cornwell, director of Critical Care and Cardiovascular Services at Floyd. Only 22 echocardiography labs in Georgia are accredited by the ICAEL and Floyd

“This recognition by the ICAEL demonstrates Floyd’s commitment to quality patient care and diagnostic evaluations,” said Anthony Gallagher, clinical coordinator for Floyd Medical Center’s Echocardiography Laboratory.
