Fellow volunteers with the National Trail of Tears Association along with local researcher Jeff Bishop are looking for financial assistance in order to preserve what may be original Cherokee Indian cabins from the early 1800’s located in Floyd County.
It is estimated by Bishop that Floyd County has 100 sites that should be researched for possible Cherokee connections.
Without financial support to preserve the cabins and quick help from experts to verify which structures were built by the Cherokee’s, Bishop says he’s certain the vacant cabins won’t last much longer.
There are currently no sites in Georgia included in the Trail of Tears.
