Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday is August 2-5

Published Jul 31, 2007

The Georgia Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday is Aug. 2-5 and certain purchases made over the holiday weekend will be exempt from state and local sales taxes. Three types of goods are exempt: clothing, personal computers and accessories and school supplies. Clothes and shoes are exempt as long as the item costs $100 or less. Jewelry, watches or watchbands, eyewear, handbags and umbrellas are not exempt. For computers and accessories for personal use, the limit is $1,500 for a single purchase. If the single purchase exceeds $1,500, the entire purchase is not exempt from sales tax. Practically anything needed to set-up and operate a computer at home is exempt. School supplies up to $20 per item are exempt during the Sales Tax Holiday. Saving 6 or 7 percent on purchases may not sound like much, but the Sales Tax Holiday has become so popular most retailers offer big sales to attract additional business.

More detailed information on what is and is not exempt can be found on the Georgia Department of Revenue's Web site, www.etax.dor.ga.gov/salestax/holiday/index.shtml
